Virtual Floral Workshop

I had such a great time teaching my virtual floral workshop last week! I had lots of people ask, so as promised, the details and links for supplies are below. I hope this inspires you to create something beautiful! “Just living is not enough, said the Butterfly,... One must have Sunshine, Freedom, and a little Flower.”

Supplies: Floral Snips or Clippers, Floral Food, Florals, Medium Glass Vase (I will be using a cube for the workshop), and Floral Tape. Supply items are linked here. Detailed instructions are below.

  • Greenery (5-7 pieces)

  • 3 Line Flowers (and a few extra to cut  short and layer in)

  • 6 Face Flowers (feel free to pick multiple varieties)

  • 7-10 Stems of Filler (feel free to pick three varieties of filler)

Picking Blooms: Start by selecting fresh cut flowers. You can find these through local growers and the grocery store. Find the blooms that are just starting to open, have firm stems, healthy leaves, healthy petals, and are standing tall.

Processing Your Flowers: Strip your stems of all of the leaves and stray pieces. These stems will be covered by water. When you begin arranging you will cut all stems according to length, but when processing, cut them diagonally approximately 1 inch from the bottom to keep them fresh. Cutting your stems diagonally will help your flowers absorb the floral life and water in the container.

Preparing Your Vase: Start with a clean vase, and grid the top with floral tape. Then you can add in a packet of flower food. If you’re getting these from the grocery store you should have them, if not, add a teaspoon of sprite to keep water fresh.

Begin Arranging:

Green the base of your container- Layer in your different stems of greenery from one corner to the next. I suggest varying the height of each stem throughout the grid.

Place your Line Flowers- You will work in a triangle shape placing three line flowers. Two on the bottom corners and one on the top middle.

Place your Face Flowers- You will begin placing your face flowers opposite the triangle. If you have a large face flower (like a hydrangea) you will want to place it in the center. You will then feed the line flowers into your hydrangea. The other face flowers can be placed at varying angles and heights. You can place them in groupings if you desire.

Place your Filler Flowers- This is the last step of arranging. At this point in the process you are marrying all of the florals together. Use these flowers to fill in the gaps and holes.

Greenery: Eucalyptus, Lemon Leaf, Pittosporum, Camelia Leaves, Boxwood

Greenery gives good texture and fluff to an arrangement, The green tones bring out the color of the blooms. You can use greenery from your yard!

Line Flowers: Stock, Larkspur, Bells of Ireland, Snap Dragons, Foxglove, Veronica and

Delphinium.

Line flowers give height, angles, movement and balance. Flowering branches can serve as line flowers if you are unable to find anything above.  Line flowers grow tall and often have curving ends.

Face Flowers: Poppy, Rose, Carnation, Gerbera, Sunflower, Daffodil, Lily, Tulip, Zinnia, Alstroemeria

Face flowers are typically round and usually the focal point in your arrangement. Face flowers will give the arrangement a sense of weight and focus.

Filler Flowers: Spray Roses, Wax Flower, Hypericum Berries, Alstroemeria, and Queen Anne's Lace

Filler flowers (stems with a lot of little flowers) are just that. They fill in the spaces of your arrangement and marry all of the elements together. Once you’ve layered in your filler florals, you will have aesthetically connected the line and face florals together. This should finish out the arrangement with a full and lovely look.
